Canal Robots was the name given to a ‘photo do’ in September 1978. It proved to be memorable and was repeated one year later on the same corresponding Sunday in September. It grew in popularity and became an annual event. Some other ‘photo do’s’ became annual events but they eventually faded away while Canal Robots has continued until the present day.
A ‘photo do’ is a photo session, a bit of a ‘do’ with cameras and props, generally improvised with an emphasis on the bizarre. They can also be seen as a ‘happening’, a ‘performance’ but the primary reason was always to achieve a ‘crazy’ photo. For decades the resulting photographs remained as they were took but gradually the enhancement and manipulation with digital software has sometimes become part of the process.
