Here is one of those short stories.
One of Those Mornings
You know that saying ‘I should have stayed in
bed this morning’. Well, it was one of those
mornings, but I didn’t know it yet. I was
dozing. Outside it was cold, cloudy and dark.
You wouldn’t have thought dawn had even
happened. But, the weather has little to do
with our demeanour really, apart from the
excuse to say ‘it looks drab today’ or ‘where
has the sun gone’, comments that won’t
change the nuts and bolts of nature, but just
give you an excuse to feel glum and lazy.
Well, not me. Actually, I leapt out of bed,
quite literally, because a spider had dropped
from the ceiling and into the bed. It was only
a little spider and of no harm, but that
natural instinct kicked in, and I was on the
floor in a split second. Only trouble was, I
landed on a pair of shoes by the bedside and
fell awkwardly spraining my ankle. I let out a
sigh as the pain ripped up my leg. I had to sit
myself on the bed to recover my senses and
without realising it I squashed the spider
which was under the covers. Eventually, I
stood up again, testing my ankle by gingerly
stepping forward, steadying myself against the
wall and then sitting back down on the bed. I
got dressed, rather slowly, and straightened
the bed, only then noticing the dead spider, a
pitiful sight of mangled legs, and brushed it
onto the floor.
That sprained ankle wasn’t that bad and by
the end of the day I was pretty much back to
my normal self, although the day itself had
been a write off, the few plans I had made,
cancelled until tomorrow. It was the spider’s
fault I thought, but look at it from the
spider’s point of view. Dead and forgotten, its
only crime, getting up and exploring the
neighbourhood. Maybe, it should have stayed
in bed that morning or as spiders say, ‘I
should have stayed in web this morning’.
